Vonda,
This is an unique book by Abner and Amanda (Sudano) Ramirez, the musicians that make up the husband and wife duo, Johnnyswim。 It is about a dream chased, but also the realization that the dream is not distant。 It’s not a future thing。 It won’t happen when sales hit a specific number or awards are achieved。 Rather, the dream is found in this moment, right now。 If I can describe the book’s other facets, I’d say it’s one part travelogue, one part family history, one part memoir, one part love story This is an unique book by Abner and Amanda (Sudano) Ramirez, the musicians that make up the husband and wife duo, Johnnyswim。 It is about a dream chased, but also the realization that the dream is not distant。 It’s not a future thing。 It won’t happen when sales hit a specific number or awards are achieved。 Rather, the dream is found in this moment, right now。 If I can describe the book’s other facets, I’d say it’s one part travelogue, one part family history, one part memoir, one part love story, one part photo album, one part music business navigation, one part family dinner, one part shooting the breeze, and one part tall tale。 That adds up to quite a delectable multi-course meal。The Ramirez’s strength is that they don’t take themselves too seriously。 In world full of people taking themselves too seriously, I found their perspectives refreshing, fun and full of joy。 The fact that the Ramirez’s know how to enjoy a good time does not mean the book was lacking in depth。 I particularly enjoyed the conversations with their manager, Jason King, as well as their stories of staying open to the organic path they are taking to achieve their dreams as they relate to the music business。 They are staying true and honest to themselves, living above the noise in an industry where some are seeking fame and fortune。 Refreshingly, they operate from a different definition of success。 I appreciated their personal perspectives of not letting their goals get in the way of relationships。 Their business relationships are their people, their family。My one disappointment is a minor one。 I’m sure this is going to sound prudish and old fashioned and really, I don’t want to even mention it。 There is an abundance of criticism in these times and I don’t want to be that person, so take it with a grain of salt。 In the photo album section is a picture of Amanda in a bikini that I think embodies a message contrary to what the Ramirez’s seem to want to convey。 The photo felt out of place。 I enjoyed and would recommend this book。 I received an arc copy from Netgalley and the publisher in exchange for my honest opinion。 。。。more
Morgan Rohbock,
Honestly it's hard to give a true star ranking to this book because it's not a true novel/memoir。 But as a fan of the band? I loved it。 I learned so much that made me love them more so I'm just going to give them the 5⭐ for a non-traditional book that's excellent。The first time I saw JOHNNYSWIM was at Raven's Tower because Ellie Boggs convinced me to go see this band I'd never heard of。 I didn't realize the venue outdoors and it was February。 I wore a light jacket thinking we'd be inside and nearly froze my butt off。But it was worth it because that concert introduced me to one of my favorite musicians。 Before the pandemic shut everything down, I was over the moon to see JOHNNYSWIM and Lauren Daigle perform together and I'm still hoping that concert happens in the not-too-distant future。So as a reader, I wanted this ARC of a memoir, interview, recipe, story photo book even though it's different from my typical novel。 And it didn't disappoint。For fans, this is all the behind the scenes knowledge you've wanted from stories about the origin of the name JOHNNYSWIM to Abner's family leaving Cuba to Amanda's impatience for Abner to propose。 It is the stories fans live to hear told at concerts x100 while maintaining Abner and Amanda's authentic voices。And for those who aren't fans, well first I really think you should because JOHNNYSWIM is great。 But also if you're just wondering what it's like to try to make it in the music business and be real authentic people and have a family and just live and enjoy everything。 Well this is a book for you too。Go watch a Live from the Backyard virtual concert, listen to the album Georgica Pond and grab this book。 If you live singer songwriter music, I think you'll love them both! Also New Orleans Jazz Fest please have JOHNNYSWIM back to play a feature on the mainstage。 I'll be there in a heartbeat。 。。。more
